Whether the #HurtBae video had you laughing or crying or both, you may want to check out musician Garren’s “#Fatherlessbae” video which follows the same format. The Compton native adapted the same format of the viral video in which we see a couple talk open and honestly about infidelity, and used it to confront his father about his absence during his childhood.
Garren questions his father about his decision to choose a life of gang-banging and going to jail over being there for his family in the video posted to his Facebook page:
“You chose the streets as a priority, in our eyes. On the times that we did find out that you were out [of prison] we were knowing after your homies. You were were on the block hanging out.”
His father rocks awkwardly in his chair as Garren recounts a birthday he missed:
“Even on my birthday I remember seeing you. You know, it was my birthday I’m looking for you and you should be looking for me, or at least calling for me.” Garren said. “Like what made you choose that life over being there for us?”
His father gives a response I’m sure many men would as he recalls a cycle of neglect and abandonment after revealing he was raised in a similar way:
“I thought as long as I was doing what you guys asked me, I was being cool. I was being a good father, but I was neglecting and I didn’t know that.”
Garren reveals how his father’s absence had a profound impact on his life as he navigated his upbringing and faced a decision to join a gang:
“You not being there for me it hurt me in a big way but it also helped me in a big way as well.”
“You not being there gave me that space and freedom to make my own choice.”
Posted originally on Friday, the video has earned nearly 2,800 views on Garren’s page, and 74,000 on BallerAlert. Many have commended Garren for his honesty and courage, and for giving a voice to those who find themselves in a same situation, but unable to have this same conversation for a variety of reasons.
