It’s pretty much established that we’re all Chewing Gum stans, correct?
Now that we’ve gotten out of the way the obvious agreement that we all love the slightly disturbing but always hilarious British comedy, I think we can admit that we’d love it even more if there were more than six episodes. So what gives? Is that the deal creator Michaela Coel struck up? Is that just what she prefers?
As it turns out, quite a few people posed that question to the 29-year-old writer and actress. She decided to address it by stating the reality that she doesn’t have a writer’s room. Because the stories come from her colorful, or “disturbed” mind as she described it, Coel can only do so much without mentally putting herself through the wringer. And considering that the budget isn’t large enough for more than what she’s doing right now, what you see is what you get, folks.
Why is Chewing Gum only 6 episodes? Ok so if you check IMDb or just google, you’ll notice most shows have at least a tiny little writer room

It is a standard thing in TV, especially US TV because it is kuh-raaazy to write a show by yourself, it’s actually stupid

I wrote every word of Chewing Gum by myself. when sum1 once tried to help, it didn’t work bcoz u kinda need to live in my disturbed head

Anymore than 6 eps per season is low key suicide. And we don’t have the economy in the U.K. TV industry to pay for anymore.

So until further notice (or a larger budget down the line), we will all have to just continue enjoying binge-watching Season 1 and 2 in like…six hours. Either way, those 12 episodes deliver more than enough laughs.
