Serena williams met

While we, of course, couldn’t keep our eyes off of Serena Williams’ growing baby bump which she debuted for the first time in public at last night’s Met Gala, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t torn between staring at her gorgeous glow and that sleek bob as well.

While most stars rock looks we wouldn’t dare wear in real life on the Met Gala red carpet, Serena’s look, from head to toe, is one we could easily step out the house with on a Tuesday. That’s why we got the details on that fabulous mane and fresh face of hers, created by Unilever Hair Expert Ursula Stephen and L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Makeup Artist Sir John. Here are their step-by-step guides (maternal glow sold separately).

The Hair

“Serena was wearing a classic tonight… Versace! When I saw the sketch, I thought it was so glamorous, and I wanted to make sure her hair didn’t compete with her stunning dress or jewelry,” Ursula said of the choice to give Serena an understated look. “I wanted to push the bar with Serena, but I also wanted her to feel comfortable and gorgeous by giving her a classic, yet chic look to compliment her gown.”

  1. To prep, I ran my fingers through Serena’s hair using Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Volumizing Weightless Blow Dry Spray ($4.99) and began blow drying using the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer ($399) (aka my dream dryer!) to prevent heat damage and protect natural shine.
  2. Once her hair was completely dry, I used a flat iron to make her hair pin-straight, curving the iron to flip it out slightly at the ends.
  3. Next, I brushed her hair back and spritzed it with Dove Style+Care Non-Aerosol Extra Hold Hairspray ($3.99) to enhance her hair’s natural shine. If needed, you can secure the hair behind the ear using bobby pins to avoid any movement.
  4. I finished the look by applying Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Anti-Humidity Spray ($3.99) throughout her hair along with a light pomade to her ends for long-lasting hold.

The Face

“We really wanted to go for a fresh, minimalistic look for Serena,” Sir John explained. “She had a gorgeous dress with a bold color, so we opted for matte skin and golden eyes. I really wanted her to look natural and like her best self.”

  1. To prep Serena’s skin, I used L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Moisturizer ($17.99) for oily skin to help mattify. Then, for her complexion I applied L’Oréal Paris Infallible Total Cover Foundation ($12.99) with a dampened L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender ($7.99) sponge.
  2. Next, I applied Infallible Pro-Matte Powder ($12.99) to give a very matte finish to the foundation look.
  3. For contour, I used the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Contour Palette in Deep ($12.99) and for the highlight, I applied L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Liquid Illuminator in Golden ($12.99) to her cheekbones, lightly pressing into the skin for a very subtle glow.
  4. For Serena’s brows, I used the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Kabuki ($12.99).
  5. Then for Serena’s eyes, I first used L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Paints in Nude Fishnet ($8.99) all over the eye, then pressed L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Eternal Sunshine ($8.99) to create a golden lid.
  6. I then lined her eyes with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Eyeliner in Black Party ($9.99) and applied generous coats of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara ($7.99).
  7. For Serena’s lips, I used a mix of shades from the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Lip in Pink ($16.99).
  8. To finish the look, I set Serena’s makeup with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Setting Spray ($16.99).
